BUILDING MATERIALS

This module aims to expose the types of materials in the construction industry, furthermore helping us understand the physical and chemical properties of them as well as how its use applies to the suitability of a structure/building. My tutor throughout the entirety of this module was

Ms Tamil Salvi.

Taylor's Graduate Capabilities Acquired:

PROJECT 1: FAMOUS ARCHITECT

For our first assignment, in a group of three, we were required to select one well known Architect of our choice and do in-depth research of one of their buildings in regards to the material they use and how it relates to the concept. We had to include at least 3 materials. After that, we had to tabulate our data into 2 A2-sized presentation boards.

I was in a group with Ng Lek Yuen and Ahmad Syafiq Deen. We decided to choose Steven Holl and focus on his work, Daeyang Gallery and House, located in Seoul, South Korea.

Overall, I really enjoyed this project because we were allowed to use Photoshop as a medium; which was something I find myself to be quite good at. Other than that, it was interesting to learn more about Steven Holl and his humble beginnings and his mind on the Daeyang Gallery and House.

PROJECT 2: FORM, SPACE AND PATTERN: AN EXPERIENTIAL EXPLORATION

For our final assignment, in a group of six, we had to select an existing commercial building that can give us experience in exploring the building materials. This means we had to do a case study on a building, and that includes a site visit. After that we had to tabulate our data into 3 A2-sized presentation boards; including a mood board to show the feel of the space.

As for our individual parts, we had to select one space within the commercial building and conduct an experiential analysis between the materials and the space itself, and then tabulate the data into 1 A2-sized presentation board.

I was in a group with Ahmad Syafiq, Jordan Tok, Ng Lek Yuen, Kang Zi Shan, and Tan Yang, and we decided to choose Empire Damansara, a mixed development located in Damansara Perdana, to do a case study on. Individually, I chose to focus on the waiting area of the Damansara Performing Arts Centre.

To sum it up, researching about the building was very engaging. I feel like I know more about how materials relate to spaces and play a part in our experience within it.
