ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I
This module aims to introduce us to the basics of architectural design. In 1.0, we are more focused on Body and Space, where we explore the human ergonomics and anthropometrics, as well as how spaces are related to our activities and movements. We also go into detail about self-expression.

As a whole, despite certain obstacles, I enjoyed researching about the human ergonomics and how spaces affect us. I hope I will be able to carry this knowledge up until my work days.

Taylor's Graduate Capabilities Acquired:

PROJECT 1: REPRESENTING ME
For our first assignment, as a form of ice breaking, we had to produce an abstract form that expresses a Pokemon character that closely resembles our own personality. I chose Cubone as my character as he is introverted and keeps to himself a lot. I was tutored by Ms See Kwangli.

To me, being introverted meant getting energy from being by yourself most of the time. I translated this idea into a 'safe space' where I find myself to be creative. Same way Cubone resorts to be by his own to express himself better.

PROJECT 2: SMALL SHELTER
For our second project, in a group of two to three, we had to build a shelter by applying basic human ergonomics and anthropometrics, and exploring with forms. The aim of the shelter was to get people to stay in it for one night at Janda Baik. I was put into a group with Ahmad Syafiq and Akif Nukman. We were tutored by Mr NIk Kadir Shah.

Our design was based on the golden tortoise beetle. It has a transparent shell-like mechanism that comes out from where its wings are. We attempted to do that whereby the spaces can be of multiple usage and the shelter was compact – it could be closed from either or both sides to create a space suitable for 1-2 people.

Overall, I really liked this project because the outcome turned out to be good. It was actually big enough to comfortably squeeze in eight people.

PROJECT 3: DREAM SPACE FOR THE USER
Individually, we had to explore a certain aspect of our personality and turn it into a storytelling narrative. The most distinctive thing about me is that I hate getting picked on, and I am very vocal and opinionated about it. My narrative behind this was due to the fact that I was bullied in secondary school by someone who never even took the time to get to know me. I used to be a very quiet and timid person, and for five years I felt like I had to be kept to myself, and had very little friends I trusted. Eventually I became a better person from the trauma, and in turn I became more of a leader than a follower, having more friends and opening myself up in the process.

With this narrative, we were required to translate it into a hideout space, using architectural elements that gives the feel of the story we're telling. We had to produce a 1:50 model with a floor requirement of 70-100 square metres. Our dream space was to be put in between two buildings with a site context of our choice.

For my final model, I played around with light penetration and form manipulation. As the spaces go along it gets brighter and eventually ends with an open space at the top. The 'real' materials used are concrete > plaster walls > hardwood.
