ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO II
This module is a continuity from Design Studio I from the first semester. In 2.0, we learn about User and Context, which explores the relationship between the user and the natural environment, as well as precedent studies. As Architects, this is one of the vital steps we have to take before we design a building: how it responds to the surroundings. To quote one of my lecturers, 'the site gives you clues about the design.'

I feel that I really enjoyed this semester as it was more about designing based on contextual concepts, something I find interesting.

PROJECT 1: FAMOUS ARCHITECTS, FABULOUS HOUSES – DIAGRAMMATIC ABSTRACTION
For the first assignment, in a group of six, the objective was to investigate how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements: architectonics - solid, planes, lines and frames. From the research and analysis we had to produce 10 analysis diagrams as well as 10 diagrammatic models (8 x 8 x 8 cm), based off Architectural Precedent Studies: organization of space/form, circulation and path-space relationship, spatial hierarchies, context and elements, in order to express what is "hidden" in the designs. We were randomly given houses and architects around Asia.

I was put into a group with Chow Su Ling, Ng Lek Yuen, Lim Peidi, Sarah binti Mohd Esa and Ng Pui Yan, and the house we were given was the Aurapin House by Bangkok-based Architect Boonlert Hemvijitraphan. We were tutored by Mr Nazmi Anuar.

Our first task before kick starting the project was to do our own research and analysis of the house. With these information we had to tabulate them into presentation slides and present to the entire class so that they can get to know a little bit about the house.

PROJECT 2: TEA PAVILLION
For the second project, we were required to be in pairs. I was in a group with Ng Lek Yuen. The objective of this project was to conduct a site analysis on a given site, and with the data collected, we had to design a 50m3 Tea Pavilion. To start off the project, the entire semester was divided into two groups: Group A and Group B, and we were required to do two case studies about tea pavilions. I was randomly put into Group B, led by Nazrul Kamsol. Our tutors for Group B were Mr Adib Ramli, Ms Alia Ahamad and Mr Bryan.
CASE STUDY 1: BEIJING TEA HOUSE BY KENGO KUMA
CASE STUDY 2: GLASS TEA HOUSE BY TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA
Moving on to the site visit, being in Group B, the site that was given to us was the Cameron Tea Valley House 2, located in Cameron Highlands, Tanah Rata, Pahang. We had to stay there for 3 days and 2 nights. In order to conduct the site analysis. After the site visit, with all of the data collected, we had to present our findings to the tutors in the form of slides.

And finally, we had to start designing the tea pavilion. Lek Yuen and I were tutored by Mr Bryan. With the information gathered from the site analysis, we were required to choose a specific area on site that was the most suitable to build a tea pavilion on. With this, we had to make a site model of the area to show the topography of the site, a 1:50 model of our tea pavilion and A3 presentation boards, as well as provide 5 A5 sketches of the intagible aspects of our site.

PROJECT 3: WEEKEND LODGING
For the final project, as a continuation of the previous one, individually, we were assigned to design a retreat house/weekend lodging, with a maximum size of 150m2, also based on the site analysis. My tutor for this project was Mr Bryan. The area I chose on site was the same as the tea pavilion, and had a pathway connection to it.
